February 1, 2017 - Eighth grade student Paul Topalov was named the Sidney Middle School Geography Bee Champion. Sixth grade student Laina Hitchcock finished as runner up. 25 students in grades 5-8 at Sidney Middle School competed in the Geography Bee.
Participants included: Luke Bemus, Ana Brady, Addison Cable, Cody Carr, Aidan Cox, Aric Engle, Cameron Fitch, Paige Frew, Nathan Gailey, Justin Gates, Mallory Godwin, Gabe Harter, Isaiah Huff, Brooklyn Koester, Jason Moton, Marco Orozco, Tyler Overholser, Damian Pellman, Teegan Shoe, Thomas Sibert, Connor Simpson, Josh Webster, and Emma Wellman.
To compete in the state bee school champions must take an online qualifying test. Topalov should be notified of his qualifying status at the beginning of March. The National Geographic Society invites up to 100 of the top-scoring students in each of the 50 states, District of Columbia, Department of Defense Dependents Schools and U.S. territories to compete in the state Bees. These qualifying semifinalists are eligible to compete in the 2017 National Geographic Ohio State Bee. This is the second level of the National Geographic Bee competition, which is now in its 29th year. The contest will be held at Orange Middle School in Lewis Center on Friday, March 31, 2017.
