COVID-19 is a respiratory illness spread from person to person. Symptoms appear 2-14 days after exposure and include fever, cough, and shortness of breath.
If you believe you have COVID-19, please call your doctor. They will do a health assessment over the phone to determine the next steps.
Social distancing is the best practice to slow the spread of the virus - STAY AT HOME, practice good hygiene (wash hands frequently, especially before and after eating, refrain from touching your face, wipe all frequently touched surfaces with soap or disinfectant on a regular basis including your phone and doorknobs).

LONG TERM DISTANCE LEARNING PLAN
April 2, 2020
Now, that we know distance learning will last through May 1, here is our plan for SCS families and their students beginning Monday, April 6:
PreK: Students will learn with their teachers using Class Dojo, Remind App, and email: all accessible online from devices, including mobile phones. For those who need paper/pencil copies to access learning activities, packets can be picked up at Whittier Early Childhood Center during meal pick-up (Monday & Thursday 10 am - 12 pm).
Grades K-2: Students will access grade-level specific, bi-monthly learning activities online (see below for links). These activities include links to games, resources, and videos of our teachers presenting short lessons. For those students without internet access at home, paper/pencil learning activity packets can be picked up any day and time at their school. These packets will be in weatherproof bins on the school's porch outside the main doors. If you need a copy and none are available, please let your child's teacher or principal know. As students complete the work, we encourage you to make sure the student's name is on the packet and return it to the bin marked for returned school work.
Grades 3-4: Students will use Google classroom and videos to access their online learning. Teachers will make certain families with internet access know how to use this learning platform. Teachers will make certain families with internet access know how to use this learning platform if it is new to them. Students are encouraged to complete work and return it in order to get feedback from their teachers, though we will be flexible and empathetic to families’ varied situations. Students will not be penalized academically during this time.
Teachers will be reaching out to families on a weekly basis. Please be sure to check your email and answer phone calls. Because teachers are calling from their home, you may not recognize the number on caller ID. Additionally, if your email and/or phone number changes during this time, please be sure to update it in Final Forms.
April 1, 2020
For students at SHS, SMS, Northwood, Emerson, and Longfellow, personal belongings from lockers and/or desks will be packaged and tagged. Families will have the opportunity to pick up belongings on April 7 and 8 from 12-6 pm. Each school will communicate what that system will look like for their building. Staff will bring the bags to you at your car.
District administration has chosen this method to limit the number of people within our buildings. Our custodial staff has done top-to-bottom deep cleaning and we don't want to open the buildings to the public (ie parents/students) and risk bringing in germs. Thank you for your understanding.

PRIMARY ELECTION EXTENSION
March 27, 2020, 6:00PM
On March 25, 2020, the Ohio General Assembly passed H.B. 197, a sweeping piece of legislation aimed at dealing with the state’s response to the Coronavirus/COVID-19 pandemic. Among other items, the bill sets April 28, 2020 as the final day of Ohio’s primary election.
Voting in the March 17 Primary Election has been extended to April 28 via absentee voting only. There will be NO IN-PERSON voting.
DOWNLOAD AND PRINT THE ABSENTEE BALLOT REQUEST
The absentee request needs to be returned to the Shelby County Board of Elections prior to April 25 to ensure you have your ballot and can return it to the Board of Elections by April 27 (must be postmarked that April 27 to count).
Voters can select a party-specific ballot OR an issues only ballot.

CHROMEBOOKS AT HOME - Technical or Hardware Issues

For K-2 students, or students who may have forgotten their username/password, you may access the Chromebook using firstname.lastname@example.org, with a password of PassWord! Technical assistance can be obtained by emailing email@example.com, or by calling 937-494-2028.
If you are having hardware issues, please bring your Chromebook to Sidney High School ( at the rear of the building) on Monday, March 30 from 9am-12pm.
SHORT TERM DISTANCE LEARNING - March 24-April 3

Sidney City School's goal for the extended spring break is to provide resources for families that allow for fun engagement and reinforce skills and knowledge already acquired. We want to reduce any slide that may occur from being off for an extended time.
To help with that, our teachers have gathered virtually to create a collection of google documents based on grade level and or subject matter. These can be found at www.sidneycityschools.org/content/distancelearning. Within these documents are resources for families to do at home. We don't want parents to feel saddled with a lot of work, so we have created a schedule to help guide families through each day - Find that linked at www.sidneycityschools.org/content/distancelearning.
Our staff is working to create a long-term distance learning plan in the event the extended spring break should go longer. For that long-term plan, Chromebooks will be necessary for grades K-12. Preschool will not need any devices. See Device Distribution below.

- Chromebooks for families in need who currently have internet access will be available to sign out one more time on Monday, March 30, from 9AM-12PM at Sidney High School at the rear of the building opposite the tennis courts.
- Families who need internet access AND devices will be contacted in the near future about when their equipment will be ready.
- We will provide up to two Chromebooks for families with 4 students or less; those with 4+ students can get more devices, number depending on total number of kids.
- If you do not have internet, we ask that you wait until we have hotspots ready to distribute before you get a device. Chrome books will not work without internet due to their functionality.
Charter Communications, the company that owns Spectrum, is offering free internet access to households with K-12 or college students. The free internet comes with a few restrictions.
- Households cannot already have Spectrum internet
- Households cannot have an outstanding balance with Charter or Spectrum
To enroll, call 1-844-488-8395. Installation fees will be waived for new student households.
If you are interested in signing up for a longer-term, Spectrum offers Spectrum Internet Assist, a high-speed broadband program to eligible low-income households that starts at $14.99.
**We are not responsible for this deal, we simply saw it and thought we would share it.**
Should we have to provide remote instruction for a longer period of time beyond April 3, we are working with T-mobile with the intent to be able to provide hotspots to those who need them. This is still in development.

During this unusual time, Sidney City Schools wants to ensure our students have access to meals they would normally rely on from the school. All K-12 Sidney students qualify for these FREE meals.
We will be modifying the frequency of pick-ups/deliveries beginning Thursday, March 26 due to the Governor's Stay In Home Order. We would like to limit the number of times families are out.
MARCH 26 - APRIL 3 (Mondays/Thursdays)
In an effort to limit social exposure, beginning Thursday, March 26, meal pick-up will take place two days a week - Monday and Thursday. You will receive meals for Thursday/Friday on Thursday, and Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday on Monday. Pick-up- times will be changing to 10am-12pm.
Student meal pick-up is 10am-12pm at the following locations:
- Longfellow (parking lot door)
- Northwood (drop-off doors)
- Whittier (front of school)
- Sidney Middle School (front of school)
If students live in the following areas, here is distribution information for those locations including the approximate time of delivery:
- Orbison Park - shelter house - 10:15am
- Mystic Apts - 1st drive - 10:30am
- Hill Top Apts - Shelby Metropolitan Housing sign - 10:15am
- Arrowhead Apartments - entrance - 10:15am
- Port Jefferson - store - 10:30am
- Maplewood - Grange Hall - 11:00am
**Drivers will wait 20 minutes at these locations**
Both breakfast and lunch will be available for pick-up at Longfellow, Northwood, Whittier, and Sidney Middle School. We will have a walk-up/drive-thru system. Students will get both breakfast and lunch at the same time.
You may choose any of the locations based on convenience for you. Siblings enrolled in Sidney City Schools may pick up from the same location despite the different schools they may attend.
Breakfast will be similar to the options available at school and lunch will be a lunchable style or sack lunch style meal. IF YOUR CHILD HAS A FOOD ALLERGY, PLEASE CALL US (937-497-2200) TO LET US KNOW. We will make efforts to accommodate allergens but cannot guarantee to do so due to the process of packing/distributing stable foods. Please be sure to ask staff at the time of pick-up.
Meals can be delivered to students who are outside of the two-mile radius of the pick-up locations. If you do not know if you are within the two-mile radius of a location or you need to know which location is closest, please call Joni Renner at 937-497-2206. Parents do not have to be present with the child at the time of pick-up.

Due to Ohio Governor Mike DeWine's orders, no students will be allowed within our school buildings during the extended break. All practices, contests, meetings, and rehearsals will cease until we return on April 6.
The SHS musical will be postponed.
Prom is canceled; students have received an email about possibilities for an alternate date and need to complete a survey.
Hall of Honor will be postponed.
Kindergarten Registration/Screening will be postponed.
All activities beyond April 6 will be a wait-and-see situation. Much of this depends on the direction of the state during this current three-week break.

UPDATE: Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has directed schools be closed for three weeks beginning end of day Monday, March 16 - Friday, April 3. We have a scheduled day off for Friday, March 13. Our scheduled spring break is March 16-20. We will not return to school until Monday, April 6.

COVID PRECAUTIONS & PREPARATIONS

The health of our students, families, and staff is of utmost concern. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine recently confirmed that there are positive cases of COVID-19 (coronavirus) in Ohio. While these confirmed cases are in Cuyahoga and Stark counties near Cleveland, Sidney City Schools is continuing to work in earnest to reduce the potential spread of disease.
The district is taking steps to minimize exposure and prepare for the potential school closure if directed by state or health officials by following guidelines provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Shelby County Health Department, and Ohio Department of Education (ODE).
HOW IS THE DISTRICT PREVENTING THE SPREAD OF DISEASE IN SCHOOL BUILDINGS/BUSES?
- All buildings are being cleaned and disinfected regularly with high-grade disinfectants as standard practice within the district; custodial staff is cleaning and disinfecting buildings more frequently, with extra emphasis on frequently touched surfaces such as door handles, desks, drinking fountains, technology, etc. Custodians are also refilling soap and hand sanitizer dispensers more frequently to ensure none ever run out. We’ve ordered additional soap and disinfectant wipes to ensure our supply is ample.
- All buses will be disinfected daily.
- Food Service will be installing hand sanitizer pumps at the beginning of every food line and at the exits of each cafeteria/gym.
WHAT CAN STUDENTS, STAFF, AND FAMILIES DO TO STAY HEALTHY?
Please follow all guidelines provided by the CDC to prevent the spread of disease.
- Practice effective handwashing (Wet; Lather; Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the “Happy Birthday” song from beginning to end twice; Rinse; Dry).
- Cough or sneeze into your elbow or a tissue.
- Stay home when you are sick, especially with a fever. The rule for fevers is no school or work until you are fever-free for at least 24hrs without the aid of fever-reducing medicine.
- If any student/staff member appears to be symptomatic, we will remove them from the general population.
ARE WE CONSIDERING CLOSING?
Educating our students is our top priority and that needs to be done in a safe environment. We will look to local health officials to determine the best course of action as COVID-19 spreads across our country. If it is determined that school needs to be closed, we will give parents detailed information. At this time, we encourage parents to begin to identify childcare accommodations in the event we are forced to close schools.
IF SCHOOLS ARE CLOSED, WILL THERE BE REMOTE EDUCATION?
Since we are not a one-to-one device district and not all of our families have home access to technology and internet, should we be forced to close, the district will develop plans for education engagement at home. For our primary and intermediate grades, reading with your child is one of the most beneficial things you can do. Playing board games, counting and sorting items at home, and even cooking also reinforce many objectives learned at school. Again, we will communicate plans with parents should this occur.
ARE ANY DISTRICT/SCHOOL RELATED EVENTS CANCELED AT THIS TIME?
There are no district-related cancellations at this time; however, this is a rapidly changing situation. Right now, we ask all families to proceed with an abundance of caution and attempt to practice social distancing. Social distancing refers to measures that are taken to increase the physical space between people to slow the spread of the virus. By maintaining a distance of six feet from others when possible, people may limit the spread of the virus. In the event of school closure, all extracurricular activities will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
Since we are entering spring break, please be mindful of your social interactions during your time off. Again, follow disease prevention practices fully. Our custodians will continue to spend time over spring break deep cleaning.
This global health event impacts us all. It requires all of us to take careful precautions and to follow advice provided by public health experts. While this message outlines the steps being taken by the district, we would like to remind families that they have the full discretion to make decisions regarding their children.
