February 8, 2017 - Sidney City School District recently held their school-wide spelling bees. The winner and runner-up(s) at each school went on to compete in the citywide spelling bee on February 7, 2017, at Sidney Middle School.
Students in third and fourth grades, as well as fifth grade students from Sidney Middle School participated in the Emerson bee, which went 11 rounds. Fourth grade student Blaze Darner, son of Robert and Ann Darner, won the bee by correctly spelling ‘thicket.’ Fourth grade student Olivia Oldham, daughter of Brian and Leigh Oldham, was the runner-up.
Students in third, fourth, and fifth grade participated in the Northwood bee, which went 13 rounds. Third grade student Keegan Conley, son of Matt and Dana Conley, won the bee by correctly spelling ‘coronet.’ Fifth grade student Rocelyn Cathcart, daughter of Mark and Darlene Cathcart, was the first runner-up, with fifth grade student Kayla Rush, daughter of Yvonne Parke, finishing as the second runner-up.
Students in third, fourth, and fifth grade participated in the Longfellow bee, which went nine rounds. Fifth grade student Alexia Hamilton, daughter of Bryan Hamilton and Kasey Gregory, won the bee by correctly spelling ‘peculiar.’ Fifth grade student Tayjon Kelly, son of Ayoub and Heather Samari, was the first runner-up.
Students in third, fourth and fifth grade participated in the Whittier bee, which went 11 rounds. Third grade student Alicia Villanueva, daughter of Rogelio and Danica Villanueva, won the bee by correctly spelling ‘infuriating.’ Fourth grade student Tatum Werntz, daughter of TJ and Tina Werntz, was the first runner-up.
Sidney Middle School
Students in sixth, seventh, and eighth grade participated in the SMS bee, which went 13 rounds. Eighth grade student Emily Birkemeier, daughter of Steven and Barbara Birkemeier, won the bee by correctly spelling ‘allegiance.’ Seventh grade student Kayla Smith, daughter of Kenneth and Crystal Smith, was the first runner-up. Sixth grade student Alexis Hall, daughter of Zach and Casey Hall was the second runner-up.
Holy Angels and Christian Academy
The following students from Holy Angels and Christian Academy qualified at their schools to participate in the citywide spelling bee: Eighth grade Christian Academy student Brooke Fishback, child of David and Becky Fishback; fifth grade Christian Academy student Emerson Stein, child of Richard and Susan Stein; seventh grade Holy Angels student Adith Joshua George, child of George Ramayya and Glory George; and eighth grade Holy Angels student Jonathan VanSkiver, child of Brent and Shelley VanSkiver.
Joshua George won the citywide spelling bee on February 7, by correctly spelling 'verdant.' Emily Birkemeier was runner-up.
All participants qualify for the regional spelling bee.
