Twenty-first-century education demands a practical, forward-thinking understanding of technology and a cooperative approach to integrating technology with the student’s home, classroom, and various student programs.
Sidney City Schools use technology to provide a strong foundation for the pursuit of excellence and lifelong learning. Technology is used to teach essential skills to learners of all abilities and cultures, to involve the skills and talents of our educational leaders and the community in promoting creative and critical thinking, and to help students, teachers, and the community fulfill their vision for education.
Along with supporting the day-to-day technology operations of the district, the Technology Department answers the technology goals of the curriculum agenda, supports the individual classroom needs of teachers, assists students with connecting their own devices to the learning systems, and maintains a sustainable technology operation.
The Technology Department also participates in alternative funds sourcing (such as E-Rate), new technology testing, and staff training through District professional development.
The technology department is proud to announce that our district has now made available to teachers, staff, and students the power of Google Apps for Education. This supports classrooms by providing tools for collaboration, communication, and online cloud-based file storage. Starting in the 2014-2015 school year, the Sidney High English department began the rollout with 120 Chrome books. In the 2015-2016 year, the district rolled out over 600 more Chromebooks in the district.
What Does This Mean?
This means that schools can use Google Apps for classwork, collaboration, and communication. Students are provided secure Google accounts by the district along with training and information on how to responsibly use these learning tools. All Google accounts for staff, teachers, and students are expected to be used for educational and professional purposes. Students have access to Google Drive, Classroom, and Calendar. Google Drive offers access to word processing tools such as Docs, Sheets, and Slides that are similar to Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. Classroom helps teachers create and organize assignments quickly, provide feedback efficiently, and easily communicate with their classes. Classroom helps students organize their work in Google Drive, complete and turn it in, and appropriately communicate directly with their teachers and peers online from any computer that is connected to the Internet.
