About the Sidney High School Alumni Band
The Sidney High School Alumni Band was formed this time in the fall of 1985 to play for the Sidney High School Homecoming football game. I say this time, because we had gotten together before to play for different events, but we were never organized well enough to keep active.
That first Homecoming Game, all we did was play some of the old marches that the "Sidney All Boy Band" used to play back in the fifties and sixties. We played from the stands during the third quarter. We had twenty-five people show up. The only other thing we did in 1985 was march in the Sidney Winter Wonderland parade. That was a big step for us as this was the first time that we had marched since our high school days.
We march in most parades held in Sidney, plus one or two out of town, plus we play at a couple Sidney High School Boys and Girls basketball games. From 1989 to 1996, we played a concert at the courthouse in Sidney. We normally have anywhere from 20 to 30 people attend these events.
The best-attended event each year is the football game. Starting in 1986, we did a show after the football game was over. Starting in 1994, we march pre-game at the first home game and play from the stands during the game. We've had as many as 62 show up for this event.
Our oldest member graduated with the class of 1948 and our youngest member graduated with this year's class.
The band is led on the field and in parades by drum major Doug Stewart who was drum major from 1965 to 1967.
